Beginners Guide to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Welcome to the chaotic, hyper-fast world of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls! If you are new to the game, or even new to tag-team fighting games in general, you might feel overwhelmed by the flashing lights, massive combos, and crazy assist calls.

Don't panic! This guide is designed to break down the absolute basics so you can jump into ranked matches with confidence.

1. The Core Objective

At its heart, MARVEL Tōkon is a 4v4 Tag-Team Fighter.

  • You select a team of 4 Marvel heroes or villains.
  • You bring one "Point" character to the screen to fight, while the other 3 sit in the background as "Assists".
  • The Goal: Reduce the opponent's active character's health to zero. Once a character is knocked out, the next one jumps in. Defeat all 4 of the opponent's characters to win the match.

2. Choosing Your First Team

With 22 characters currently in the roster, who should you pick?

As a beginner, do not worry too much about the Tier List right away. Picking characters you genuinely love is the best way to stay motivated. However, if you want a team that is mechanically simple to help you learn the game's systems, try this beginner-friendly composition:

  • Point (Lead): Wolverine
    • Why? He is fast, aggressive, and has very simple auto-combos. His healing factor forgives early mistakes.
  • Secondary (Brawler): Hulk
    • Why? Massive health pool and high-damage single hits. You don't need complex combos to deal damage with Hulk.
  • Support (Zoner): Iron Man
    • Why? His Unibeam assist is incredible for keeping opponents away while you figure out your next move.
  • Anchor (Closer): Captain America
    • Why? The ultimate well-rounded fighter. Good defense, good offense, great for making comebacks.

3. Understanding the HUD (Heads Up Display)

Before you throw a punch, you need to know what you are looking at on the screen.

  • Health Bar (Top): Green means healthy, yellow means danger.
  • Red Health: When you take damage, a portion of the health bar turns red instead of disappearing. If you tag that character out, they will slowly regenerate that red health while resting on the bench!
  • Energy Meter (Bottom): You build energy by attacking, getting hit, or moving forward. Energy goes from Level 1 to Level 5.
    • EX Moves cost 1 Level.
    • Ultimate Abilities cost 3 Levels.
  • Assist Portraits (Sides): Shows your benched characters. If their portrait is glowing, their assist is ready to be called!

4. The "Magic Series" Combo System

You don't need to memorize a 50-hit combo on day one. MARVEL Tōkon uses a "Magic Series" combo system, which means attacks naturally chain from Weak to Strong.

The universal beginner combo is: Light Attack (L) -> Medium Attack (M) -> Heavy Attack (H) -> Special Move (S)

Try doing this sequence rapidly. Almost every character in the game can perform this basic string on the ground. Once you master it, try launching the opponent into the air and repeating the sequence!

5. Defense: Please Block!

The biggest mistake beginners make is pressing buttons constantly. If your opponent is attacking, hold back on your directional pad/stick to block.

  • High Block (Hold Back): Blocks jumping attacks and overheads.
  • Low Block (Hold Down+Back): Blocks sweeps and low kicks.

Rule of thumb: Default to blocking low, and only stand up to block when you see the opponent jump.
